Janice Horton – otherwise known as The Backpacking Housewife – is an ex-housewife, an empty-nester, and a nomadic world traveller. Janice loves to travel and blog and podcast about dreamy destinations around the world and, in particular, talk about the pros and cons of midlife travel and making the most of opportunities to travel in midlife and in retirement – or what Janice likes to call – the Golden Age of Travel!
Biography
Once their three children had grown up, Janice Horton and her backpacking husband sold their empty nest in Scotland UK along with everything they owned and set off to travel the world. Since then they have been travelling full-time and have been around the whole world twice exploring over 60 countries, living out of an apartment, a hut, or wherever they happen to find themselves. Their inspirational story of midlife travels and adventure has garnered lots of media attention.
“For the past ten fabulously nomadic years, we’ve taken planes, trains, boats, buses and tuk-tuks, to make our way across 60 countries and continents and oceans to end up wherever we happened to find ourselves next. We’ve lived in hotels and motels and hostels and homestays, city apartments and huts on beaches, and we didn’t ever want our halcyon days of travelling to end.”
The Backpacking Housewife’s Mission Is To Inspire Other Midlife Wanderlusters And Travellers
Janice’s mission for the Backpacking Housewife brand is to inspire all singles, couples, and groups who are considering early retirement or having reached retirement age, to travel more.
Also those who don’t ever want to retire, but who might be looking to take a midlife work sabbatical to travel.
Or perhaps those in their 50’s and 60’s or older who think now might be a good time to start planning a grown-up gap year.
And all those in later life who are a little nervous about travel but would love to embrace opportunities to be ‘bold not old’.

It’s been a thrill to follow her around the world on social media and see where she ends up next and I really admire her and her husband for taking that brave leap to leave behind the UK in search of adventures abroad.
