Janice Horton – otherwise known as The Backpacking Housewife – is an ex-housewife, an empty-nester, and (normally) a nomadic world traveller. Janice loves to travel blog and podcast about dreamy destinations all around the world and, in particular, the pros and cons of midlife and senior travel and making the most of opportunities to travel in retirement – or what Janice likes to call – the Golden Age of Travel!
Once their three children had grown up, Janice Horton and her backpacking husband sold their empty nest in Scotland UK along with everything they owned and set off to travel the world. Since then they have been travelling full-time and have been around the whole world twice exploring over 50 countries, living out of an apartment, a hut, or wherever they happen to find themselves. Their inspirational story of midlife travels and adventure has garnered lots of media attention.
“For the past seven fabulous nomadic years, we’ve taken planes, trains, boats, buses and tuk-tuks, to make our way across fifty-five countries and continents and oceans to end up wherever we happened to find ourselves next. We’ve lived in hotels and motels and hostels and homestays, city apartments and huts on beaches, and we didn’t ever want our halcyon days of travelling to end.”Janice Horton
With their travels on pause in 2020 and 2021 due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, Janice and her husband (both now aged 60) have returned ‘full circle’ to Scotland and she has now turned her attention to building a travel website for the New Future when we can all travel again.
The Backpacking Housewife Dotcom is a travel website for midlife travel wanderlusters
Janice’s mission for the Backpacking Housewife website is to inspire all singles, couples, and groups who are considering early retirement or having reached retirement age, to travel more.
Also those who don’t ever want to retire, but who might be looking to take a midlife work sabbatical to travel.
Or perhaps those in their 50’s and 60’s or older who think now might be a good time to start planning a grown-up gap year.
And all those in later life who are a little nervous about travel but would love to embrace opportunities to be ‘bold not old’.
The Backpacking Housewife Dotcom is The Place on the internet to read inspirational midlife travel stories, to get planning tips, to learn travel hacks, and garner details on fabulous world travel destinations, amazing adventures, and exotic experiences that YOU can have in later life… because it’s not too late.
“I strongly believe, now more than ever, that those of us with wanderlust in our souls will still want to escape what we might now consider to be a captive lifestyle in favour of expanding our horizons.”Janice Horton
Janice works as a writer wherever she is in the world. When not writing her bestselling romantic adventure novels, she writes travel features for her website and for award-winning online e-magazines as well as national and international magazines like ‘Prima’ in the UK and ‘Friday’ in Dubai.
Janice has also been involved in BBC Scotland’s Write Here Write Now project and has been interviewed on many podcasts and radio shows including Loose Women‘s Kaye Adams on her prime time BBC Radio Scotland Show.
Janice Horton signs a deal with HarperCollins for a series of romantic travel inspired Backpacking Housewife novels
Janice Horton is now writing for One More Chapter – the romance imprint of HarperCollins Publishers UK. Charlotte Ledger, Editorial Director, bought World All Language rights after approaching the author about writing a series of novels loosely based on Janice’s own travel experiences.
Charlotte Ledger, Editorial Director at HarperCollins said: ‘I first met Janice at the Festival of Romance and fell in love with her writing. It’s been a thrill to follow her around the world on social media and see where she ends up next and I really admire her and her husband for taking that brave leap to leave behind the UK in search of adventures abroad. The Backpacking Housewife is full of Janice’s own travel experiences and, coupled with her brilliantly commercial writing, makes for a thoroughly entertaining and inspiring read.’
