WORK WITH THE BACKPACKING HOUSEWIFE
Janice Horton – otherwise known as The Backpacking Housewife – is a midlife ex-housewife whom alongside her backpacking husband packed up to travel the world once their three sons had grown and flown the family home in Scotland UK.
She has ten years of nomadic world travel experience over sixty-five countries and counting.
Janice loves to travel and write and podcast about dreamy destinations around the world and to talk about the pros and cons of midlife travel and making the most of opportunities to travel in midlife and in retirement.
“For the past ten fabulously nomadic years, we’ve taken planes, trains, boats, buses and tuk-tuks, to make our way across 65 countries and continents and oceans to end up wherever we happened to find ourselves next. We’ve lived in hotels and motels and hostels and homestays, city apartments and huts on beaches, and we didn’t ever want our halcyon days of travelling to end.”
Having lost her beloved backpacking husband to cancer early in 2025, when he was only 65 years old and not even officially at retirement age, Janice is now passionate about sharing her message on not waiting too long or leaving it too late to live the life of your dreams.
“I promised my darling husband that – when I was ready – I’d go on and have more adventures as a solo traveller and carry him with me in my heart. During previous travels, I’ve met many wonderful and confident and inspiring solo travellers, which gives me confidence. But I realise I’ll need to learn new skills to travel independently and safely as a woman alone.”
Janice aims to inspire all those in a similar situation who want to travel extensively in their midlife, and all those who are planning to retire early or have already reached retirement age, who want to incorporate more travel into their lives.
Whether it’s a weekend city break, a well-deserved holiday, a months-long sabbatical, or a meticulously planned gap year, Janice has the travel experience to offer destination inspiration, planning suggestions, and lots of helpful tips and advice.
As a bestselling writer with a world-class publishing house representing her work, together with a loyal readership and a public interest in her lifestyle, Janice has a unique and growing international social outreach that has seen her featured on TV, radio, print and online around the world.
