Where to Stay in Liverpool

Liverpool is a city that I know and love and would personally recommend to you as one of the UK’s most exciting cities for a weekend getaway, whether you’re a Beatles fan, a culture lover, a foodie, or just looking to explore a vibrant city packed full of atmosphere.

I grew up in Liverpool. I have family and friends there and visit often and I’ve never taken the world-class museums and art galleries, the iconic waterfront and Pier Head, the ferry across the Mersey, and of course, the legendary music heritage, for granted. I’m always in awe of Liverpool.

If you are looking for a weekend city break in the UK then I can assure you that Liverpool has much to offer and there’s so much to see and to do there that you’re sure to need a return trip!

Liverpool: Best Areas & THE Top Hotels for a Weekend Break

In Liverpool, there’s always something special happening for both locals and visitors alike. In this guide, I’m taking you on a tour of the best areas to stay in Liverpool City Centre for a great weekend getaway in Liverpool.

One of the best things I love about Liverpool is that it is so easy to get around because the city centre is compact and easily walkable, so there’s no need for taking taxies or waiting around for public transport, unless of course, you want to do so.

Come with me to Liverpool and let’s find out together what makes this city so great and, while exploring the different areas in the city centre, we’ll also discover some of the best hotels and where to stay in Liverpool City Centre.

BEST AREAS TO STAY IN LIVERPOOL CITY CENTRE

LIVERPOOL CITY CENTRE

Liverpool City Centre is the ideal place to stay for those who want to be in the middle of the action. If it’s your first time in the city, staying in the heart of Liverpool puts you within walking distance of almost everything.

From the fabulous Liverpool One shopping area to the Ropewalks district and Concert Square nightlife, to the Georgian Quarter and the Baltic Triangle, staying in Liverpool City Centre to be just steps from major attractions like Church Street, Bold Street, Lime Street Station, Cavern Quarter, and the Albert Dock and waterfront, with endless dining, (see my historic Liverpool pub crawl post for pubs and bars) and entertainment options.

LIVERPOOL ROPEWALKS

Ropewalks is Liverpool’s artsy, bohemian hub, perfect for culture lovers, shoppers, and nightlife fans. Named after the 19th-century rope-making trade, today it’s packed with Bluecoat arts centre, FACT multimedia studios (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology), quirky boutiques, and cosy cafés.

When the sun goes down, Ropewalks really comes alive. Trendy crowds spill out of lively bars and pubs, while dance clubs and live music venues keep the energy going late into the night. It’s a favourite neighbourhood for culture lovers, shoppers, and nightlife fans, with streets full of quirky boutiques, bold street art, and delicious local eats.

LIVERPOOL BALTIC TRIANGLE

The Baltic Triangle gets its name from Liverpool’s historic timber trade with countries like Sweden, Norway, and Russia. Back in the day, huge shipments of wood arrived here for building projects across the UK, turning the area into a hub for Nordic sailors, merchants, and communities.

Today, while the industrial past is still visible in landmarks like the Swedish Seaman’s Church, the Baltic Triangle has transformed into Liverpool’s trendy, creative playground. Once industrial, it’s now filled with street art, craft breweries, independent cafés, and live music venues. It’s perfect for visitors who want offbeat vibes, local culture, and a lively night out, while still being just a short walk from the city centre.

LIVERPOOL WATERFRONT & ALBERT DOCK

The Albert Dock and the surrounding waterfront area is an iconic and ideal place to stay if you want history, culture, and stunning riverside views, all from your hotel room window or right on your doorstep.

When I’m in Liverpool I like to stay at The Holiday Inn Express at Albert Dock.

The Albert Dock is one of Liverpool’s most famous landmarks, home to the UK’s largest collection of Grade I listed buildings and a bustling hub for culture, dining, and shopping.

I remember when, as a child growing up in Liverpool in the 1960’s and 1970’s, this area was dirty and derelict and dangerous.

But now, with its amazing restoration project completed in the 1980’s, the Albert Dock has something for everyone with attractions like Tate Liverpool, the Merseyside Maritime Museum, the International Slavery Museum (currently closed), the Wheel of Liverpool, the Beatles Story, as well and fabulous restaurants, waterfront pubs, independent shops, quirky boutiques, and those totally amazing views of the famous River Mersey.

LIVERPOOL GEORGIAN QUARTER

Liverpool Georgian Quarter is known as Liverpool’s elegant cultural area as it’s full of stunning Georgian architecture, cobbled streets, grand townhouses, and leafy squares, all set in and around Hope Street and the city’s two famous and iconic cathedrals, the grand neo-Gothic Liverpool Anglican Cathedral and the modern Metropolitan Cathedral.

Add historic pubs, independent cafés, fine dining, and cultural hotspots like the fabulous Philharmonic Hall and The Everyman Theatre, and Liverpool Georgian Quarter is an area that’s perfect for a leisurely stroll or to indulge my own specially curated and cultured historic Liverpool pub crawl!

MY TOP TIPS FOR A WEEKEND IN LIVERPOOL

Which Area In Liverpool City: Pick the right area for you – City Centre for first-timers and nightlife, Albert Dock for museums, Georgian Quarter for culture, Baltic Triangle for artsy vibes.

Book Your Hotel In Advance: Liverpool is popular year-round, especially during events and football weekends so book your hotel in advance. I like to use Booking.com as there are lots of accommodation options for all budgets and I appreciate the option to cancel if plans change and often to choose to pay on arrival.

Book Attraction Tickets Ahead: Save time and avoid the queues for top attractions like Tate Liverpool, The Beatles Story, and the Albert Dock museums. I always like to use Get Your Guide or Klook to book tickets online for attractions and activities.

Walk It All: Wear comfortable shoes because most sights are just a short stroll apart.

Mix Day & Night: Do museums and galleries by day and pubs and live music by night.

Balance Location & Vibe: If nightlife isn’t your thing, then pick Hope Street or the waterfront areas for a quieter base.

Walk or use public transport — the city centre is compact and easy to explore on foot.

Explore & Discover Hidden Gems: Explore side streets, quirky shops, street art, and Georgian squares for that authentic local ‘scouser’ friendliness and charm.

Do My Historic Liverpool Pub Crawl: For even more scouser friendliness and charm follow in my footsteps and enjoy my specially curated and cultured historic Liverpool pub crawl where every pub – and every local – has a story to share!
