WHERE TO STAY IN KUALA LUMPUR MALAYSIA
Kuala Lumpur – the capital city of Malaysia – is one of my favourite cities in the world and a place I’ve visited many times.
As I write this in June 2026, Iāve just returned from Kuala Lumpur (KL) and wanted to share with you where I stayed during this trip, where I’ve stayed on previous visits, and my thoughts on where is best to stay in Kuala Lumpur.
If youāre reading this because you are planning your very first trip to KL, this accommodation guide to Kuala Lumpur will give you information and my advice on the best areas to stay in Kuala Lumpur for first-time visitors and returning visitors, as well as a guide to best hotels near Petronas Twin Towers and where to stay in Kuala Lumpur for nightlife.
KL is a cosmopolitan city with great transport links and so Iāve often used the city as a base and exciting ātransit hubā between travelling to and from many other wonderful places in Malaysia and throughout Asia.
The vibrant capital of Malaysia is a dazzling mix of modern skyscrapers, colonial architecture, buzzing street markets, and world-class shopping malls. Travelling into the city on the KLIA Ekspres (thatās the right spelling) from the airport and seeing that fabulous skyline sparking on the horizon always gives me goosebumps of excitement and anticipation.
If this is your first visit to Kuala Lumpur then Iām very excited for you because KL is an incredible city and there is so much to do and explore there. But, whether you’re visiting for food, culture, luxury, or nightlife, choosing the best area and picking the best hotel for your comfort and budget in Kuala Lumpur can shape your experience in this amazing city.
No matter if your preference is for luxury hotels Kuala Lumpur or budget hotels Kuala Lumpur or for accommodations costing something in the middle range there will always be lots of choice. But, of course, too much choice can get overwhelming.
Let my accomodation guide on where to stay in KL help you to narrow it down!

WHERE TO STAY IN KUALA LUMPUR CITY CENTRE (KLCC)
I have mostly stayed in Kuala Lumpur City Centre in hotels near the Petronas Twin Towers when Iāve visited Kuala Lumpur. Iāve often chosen to stay in a high-end hotel – luxury travel is not my usual way of travelling – but KLCC is famously affordable for five-star hotels compared with the cost of staying in similar hotels in other top cities worldwide.
So, if you can, itās time to treat yourself. On this occasion I stayed at Traders Hotel in KLCC and upgraded to a room with lounge access and a perfect view of the famous Petronas Towers! This was my first time staying at this five-star KLCC hotel, although I have been there a couple of times before, while visiting the Sky Bar for a cocktail and its incredible views of the cityscape and Petronas Twin Towers at sunset.
If itās your first time in KL, whatever type of traveller you might be, then KLCC is where you want to be. Youāll be within easy walking distance to all the major attractions. KLCC is home to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. Thereās luxury malls for incredible shopping experiences, rooftop bars for swanky cocktails or mocktails with stunning skyline views, and thereās also lush green parks to take a morning run or an evening stroll.
Kuala Lumpur City Centre is clean, modern, and wonderfully central.
Previously, in KLCC, Iāve stayed at the wonderful The Intercontinental (my darling late husbandās favourite hotel) and alternatively, when not quite needing a five-star treatment and deciding to stay outside the KLCC area, I’ve also enjoyed staying at the Holiday Inn Express for its location in Bukit Bintang which is in KLās entertainment district.
This time, on my return to KL just a few weeks ago after my trip to South Korea – I stayed in Chinatown – in a great location next to Central Market at a great little hotel called Santa Grand Classic Kuala Lumpur Chinatown. I’d recommend it as I really enjoyed my stay in a beautiful studio room.
Occasionally, if Iām planning a longer and more relaxed stay in KL, Iāll opt to stay a bit further outside the city to get even more value for my currency against the Malaysian Ringgit at what used to be called the Holiday Inn Glenmarie Resort. Itās now known as the Hilton Shah Alam Glenmarie and has reopened in March 2026 after a fabulous refurbishment. From past experience Iād highly recommend this fabulous and relaxing luxury resort to you.
Here are my suggestions on where to stay in Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

WHERE TO STAY IN KL BUKIT BINTANG
Bukit Bintang is KLās bustling and busy entertainment district. Bukit Bintang hotels are where to stay for access to local nightlife. Itās also a perfect place to stay for food lovers, shoppers, and nightlife seekers. Thereās bright city lights, restaurants, bars and street food, mega malls, and nightlife, dominating this lively area.
Donāt miss Jalan Alor for street food heaven and Pavilion Mall Kuala Lumpur for luxury shopping.

WHERE TO STAY IN KL CHINATOWN
Chinatown offers a more traditional side of KL. Youāll also find modern comfort in this historical setting at Four Points by Sheraton. For heritage charm and budget-friendly stays for backpackers and cultural explorers check availability at the centrally located 5 Elements Hotel.
As mentioned, on my return to KL just a few weeks ago, I stayed in Chinatown in a great location next to Central Market. It’s a great little hotel called Santa Grand Classic Kuala Lumpur Chinatown. I’d recommend it as I really enjoyed my stay in a studio room. Highlights of Chinatown include Petaling Street, Sri Mahamariamman Temple and Central Market.

WHERE TO STAY IN KL BANGSAR
Bangsar is a quieter, trendy, leafy, part of Kuala Lumpur that feels more local and less touristy.
It has an expat vibe and so itās a perfect area to hang out in Kl if youāre a digital nomad or just looking for a longer stay here. Bangsar is packed with cafĆ©ās and brunch spots, cocktail bars, and boutique shops.
Youāll find chic minimalist design and an infinity pool with skyline views at the Alila Bangsar KL and enjoy spa facilities and a fitness centre at Domitys Bangsar.

WHERE TO STAY CLOSE TO THE AIRPORTS KLIA 1&2
Kl has some great transit airports catering for all budgets and comfort levels. I’ve used them often and my choice of accomodation is often determind by my length of my stay in KL, my flight time, and how tired I am!
I appreciate a good hotel close to an airport as I really don’t like a dash to the airport before a flight. So if you just want to get your head down for a few hours sleep after to ahead of a long flight I’d recommend a Sleep Lounge or Capsule Hotel in the airport. I have used and can recommend Aerotel in KLIA2 (landside). There is also Kepler Club at KLIA1 (landside).
I have most recently stayed at the Ibis Styles Sepang KLIA. I stayed twice it was that good. I had a day to enjoy the huge pool, a spacious room, gracious staff, a fabulous breakfast, and the opportunity (for a fee) to have an extended (until 6pm) late checkout before my night flight back to the UK. Located outside the airport but operate a free shuttle bus. Recommend!
I’ve also often stayed at Tune Hotel for KLIA1 or KLIA2 – located in the airport at KLIA2. Convenient, clean, basic.
BEST TIME TO VISIT KUALA LUMPUR
KL is hot and humid year-round, but some months are more pleasant than others so I recommend reading my comprehensive post on The Best And Worst Time To Visit Malaysia.
Best Overall: May to July. Slightly less rainfall and plenty of sunshine. Ideal for sightseeing and rooftop pools
Wettest Months: March to April and October to November. Heavy afternoon downpours. Fewer tourists and lower hotel prices.
