Langkawi Island, with its dramatic coastline, ancient rainforests, and powdery white sand beaches, is the jewel of Malaysia’s Andaman Sea. Formed by an archipelago of almost one hundred small islands, the main island of Langkawi offers visitors a perfect blend of duty-free shopping, ancient and UNESCO-listed geoparks, and a laid-back beach culture.

Whether you are looking for a lively beachfront promenade, a quiet romantic escape, or a deep immersion into Langkawi’s incredible natural environment, I believe that choosing the right area where to stay on Langkawi is key to shaping your island experience. In this guide, I’ll discuss the main areas on the island and explore the most popular accommodations and their proximity to the attractions on this amazing island destination.

WHERE TO STAY IN LANGKAWI

Cenang Beach (Pantai Cenang) – The Vibrant Hub

If you want to be in the heart of the action then Pantai Cenang is considered the vibrant hub of Langkawi and the most popular area on the island for its lively vibe and its easy proximity to many restaurants and bars and shops. This area is also home to Underwater World Langkawi (one of Malaysia’s largest aquariums) and the vibrant Cenang Night Market.

For me, the main attraction here is the stunning Cenang Beach. It’s wonderful to find a nice beach bar overlooking the beach for a sundowner and to see the famous Langkawi glowing sunsets. For others, it’s the availability of water sports such as parasailing, jet-skiing, and banana boat rides that are widely available directly from the beach.

Accommodations: You’ll find a huge and diverse of accommodation options here that range from budget-friendly backpacker hostels and mid-range family run motels to lovely boutique beachfront resorts. During my previous trips to Langkawi – I’ve just returned from my third visit – I have personally enjoyed staying in the mid-range (generally three-star) family run motels in the Cenang area (note: you’ll also see Cenang spelled Chenang). Tengah Beach (Pantai Tengah) – A Calmer Vibe

The more relaxed and laid back sister to Cenang Beach is Tengah Beach, located just south of Cenang along the southwest coast of Langkawi. The main road running parallel to Pantai Tengah also offers you an impressive and tempting mix of independent eateries, cafes, bars and international restaurants. But, with its less crowded sandy beach and calmer vibe, Tengah is often considered one of the best areas to base yourself on the island.

Accommodation in the Tengah Beach Area perhaps offers the best of both worlds if you prefer a more laid back holiday vacation. You’ll still have a beautiful beach, relaxing beach bars and amazing sunsets, but you’ll also only ever be a leisurely walk or a short  drive away from the centre of Cenang’s livelier and more vibrant scene. At nearby Telaga Harbour you’ll find access to boat tours, mangrove trips, and the sail away point for sunset dinner cruises. During my recent trip and stay in this area, I enjoyed a fabulous sunset dinner cruise. It was amazing to enjoy those incredible Langkawi sunset views while out on the sea. It was also great fun to enjoy the all inclusive drinks and delicious barbeque food and the dancing on board. Accommodations: I recently stayed in the Tengah Beach Area area at Fuuka Villa, which I can highly recommended to you. Fuuka Villa is not set at the beach but a location a short distance inland and in a quiet spot. There are just a few guest bungalows sited around a nice swimming pool. The accommodation is clean and safe and well appointed with repeat customers and many excellent reviews. The owner and staff are very helpful, friendly, and nice. To be honest, it’s usually booked up well in advance, so you’d be lucky to get in here but it’s always worth a try. Check availability here.

Luckily, Tengah Beach offers a wide range of accommodations to suit most budgets and travel styles. You’ll find upscale and luxury resorts, boutique and mid-range hotels and guesthouses and homestays and also eco-lodges. Datai Bay (Teluk Datai) – Luxury Rainforest Escape

The exclusive and serene Datai Bay is tucked away on the north-western tip of the island and is surrounded by a 10-million-year-old virgin rainforest that meets a pristine powder-white and private crescent beach credited by National Geographic as one of the World’s Top 10 Beaches. This stunningly pristine area of Datai Bay offers complete seclusion and a profound connection to nature. Here the nature trails are filled with unique wildlife like dusky leaf monkeys and flying lemurs and is conveniently close to the beautiful and cascading Temurun Waterfall.

Accommodations: This area is famous for five-star and world-class spa and high-end wellness and exceptional eco-resorts where the luxury villas are built directly into the jungle canopy or over the ocean. Hre you’ll find the luxury resort The Datai Langkawi and accommodations in The Datai Forest Habitat and also find the Els Club Teluk Datai golf course.

I’ve never stayed in this exclusive area myself but it would be a dream for me to do so. It’s also conveniently located for visiting the rainforest and the Temurun Waterfall. Check out your options and availability at Datai Bay here.

Kuah Town – The Local Experience

Kuah is Langkawi’s main town and the primary arrival point for visitors arriving by ferry. Expect urban vibes, central transit links, seafood markets, local dining, and duty free shopping complexes. I enjoyed visiting the harbour here and in particular The Eagle Square with its 12m iconic Eagle Statue.

Accommodation: Accommodations here are often far cheaper than the beachfront properties. There are business hotels, budget guesthouses, and serviced apartments catering to families and shoppers. But as Langkawi is only 25 km long from north to south – and transport to other areas can be easily arranged by hiring a car or taking a Grab taxi – then maybe staying in Kuah Town is a good choice for you if you are visiting on a budget and wondering where to stay in Langkawi. Pantai Kok: Scenic Landscapes & Sailing Lifestyle

Located on the western coast, staying in Pantai Kok offers you close proximity to the island’s most famous eco-tourism sights in an area with a sophisticated picturesque vista framed by verdant hills and a beautiful bay. The vibe here is upscale, scenic, and relaxed.

You’ll also benefit from the close proximity of the world-famous Langkawi SkyCab (Cable Car), the incredible SkyBridge, and the new Eagles Nest attractions, as well as the beautiful Seven Wells Waterfall (Telaga Tujuh) and Telaga Harbour Park Marina with its classy dining options. I recommend skipping the line and buying your SkyCab/SkyBridge/Eagles Nest tickets online.

Accommodations: Mostly high-end and mid-to-luxury resorts such as The Danna Langkawi (offering classic colonial architecture) and Berjaya Langkawi Resort (featuring unique chalets built on stilts over the water) and the exceptional Ritz Carlton Langkawi. TOP TIP FOR FIRST TIME VISITORS TO LANGKAWI

LANGKAWI IS A DUTY FREE ISLAND: You may or may not be aware – particularly if this is your first time visiting Langkawi – but the island has duty-free status. This means that premium goods, like for example chocolates and alcohol, are significantly cheaper here than in the rest of Malaysia.

So, if shopping is important to you then you should certainly allow a day to explore the fabulous duty free complexes in Kuah or the big duty-free malls in Pantai Cenang!

THE RESOURCES I USE TO PLAN AND BOOK MY TRAVEL ITINERARIES

SKYSCANNER .NET – I use Skyscanner website as a search engine to find and compare flights and source best flights. But I believe it’s always important to book the flight you’ve selected directly with the airline – as if anything goes wrong you are dealing directly with the airline rather than a third party agent.

TRIPADVISOR UK or TRIPADVISOR .COM – to read reviews and research hotels, things to do, local restaurants etc.

BOOKING.COM – this is my favourite for booking site for hotels and accomodation. I use the Booking.com App on my phone to reserve and to book – it’s quick and easy and I often choose the free cancellation period option in case I change my mind and rebook. I have achieved ‘genius’ level through my (hundreds) of bookings over the years. This often gives me discounts and perks like free breakfasts and room upgrades in selected accommodations. I’ve never had any problems or issues with Booking Dotcom so I’m happy to recommend booking with them.

AGODA .COM – travel site for booking hotels and transport and things to do at your destination.
